GB/T 44437-2024 Elderly oriented design furniture - General technical requirements
1 Scope
This document specifies the classification, requirements, inspection rules, marking, instructions for use, packaging, storage and transportation of elderly oriented design furniture, and describes the corresponding test methods.
This document is applicable to the design, manufacturing & machining, quality inspection, and quality assessment of elderly oriented design furniture.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 28202 and the following apply.
3.1
elderly oriented design furniture
furniture designed according to the characteristics of the elderly or intended for use by them
3.2
access area
part of the product that is accessible to the user's body in the functional position of the product under normal use
3.3
assistance device
component or assembly designed to assist elderly individuals in changing their positions under load conditions, utilizing external forces such as rotation, assisted lifting, or displacement
3.4
driving device
device used to realize the movement, functional regulation or shifting of furniture or assemblies through an electromechanical system (or some other system)
3.5
folding mechanism
mechanism connected by hinges, rotary shafts, etc., which may produce a squeezing or shearing action during operation
3.6
hazardous protrusion
protruding part or component within the access area that may cause injury during use
3.7
hazardous sharp edge
edge of a part or component within the access area that may cause injury during use
3.8
hazardous sharp point
part or component with a sharp end within the access area that may cause injury during use
3.9
hazardous contact corner
part of the furniture where edges of contour parts or components intersect within the access area and less than 1,600mm from the standing plane, which may cause injury during use
3.10
shear and squeeze point
gap that may cause injury to a body part when two components within the access area move relatively to each other (closed, opened, or folded)
3.11
assist handrail
handles on a piece of furniture used to keep the body of an elderly individual balanced or support it when the elderly individual performs activities such as getting up, sitting down, or walking
4 Product classification
4.1 The elderly oriented design furniture may be divided by the main materials into:
a) Wooden furniture oriented to the elderly;
b) Metal furniture oriented to the elderly;
c) Upholstered furniture oriented to the elderly;
d) Other elderly oriented design furniture.
4.2 The elderly oriented design furniture may be divided into the following main categories:
a) Chairs;
b) Tables and desks;
c) Cabinets;
d) Single-layer beds;
e) Sofas;
f) Mattresses.
