Part 6: Education
1 Scope
This part of GB/T 30240 specifies relevant terms and definitions, translation methods and requirements, writing requirements and the like for the use of English in education area.
This part is applicable to English translation and writing of names of schools and other educational institutions as well as school service information.

3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following term and definition apply.
3.1
educational institution
various schools at different levels and external educational institutions and places for conducting education and teaching activities
4 Translation Methods and Requirements
4.1 Names of educational institutions
4.1.1 Comprehensive university with comparatively large scale is generally translated as University. Different translation methods shall be adopted for small-scale colleges according to different natures, generally they are translated as College or School; the one with clear specialty is translated as Institute; art and research institution as Academy; vocational technical college as Polytechnic College or Vocational and Technical College.
4.1.2 Elementary and secondary schools are translated with School: "中学" as Middle School; "初中" as Junior Middle School; "高中" as Senior Middle School or High School; "职业高中", "中等专业学校" or "职业学校" as Vocational School; "小学" as Primary School; "九年一贯制学校" directly as School and school for special education as Special School or Special Education School.
4.1.3 Youth centers, bases and the like serving as external educational institution are all translated as Youth Center; Palace in Children's Palace and Youth’s Palace may continue to be used.
4.1.4 In adult education system, "业余大学", "继续教育学院" and the like are translated as College of Continuing Education; "社区学校" as Community School.
4.1.5 Where modifier or qualified component of general name is required to be translated into two or more English words, generally, they shall be placed after the general name using "of " or "for" as connection, e.g. East China University of Political Science and Law. If modifier or qualified component is only one English word, it may be placed before the general name, e.g. Nanjing Agricultural University.
4.2 School service information
4.2.1 Different translation methods shall be adopted for school gate according to different conditions: the one named with digit is translated and written in "Gate + Arabic number", e.g. "一号门" is translated as Gate 1; the one named with locality noun is translated and written in "locality noun + Gate", e.g. "东门" as "East Gate".
4.2.2 Other school service information shall be translated and written according to 5.2 in GB/T 30240.1-2013. Specific provisions are given in Annex A.
