1 Scope
This standard specifies basic requirements for controls, indicators and tell-tales symbols and positions of motor vehicles as well as the display color of tell-tale.
This standard is applicable to motor vehicles of Categories M and N.
This standard is not applicable to controls, indicators and tell-tales specific to electric vehicles.

3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 4782 and the following apply.
3.1
control
a member operated manually by the driver to change the working status or function of a motor vehicle or a certain device on the motor vehicle
3.2
indicator
a device that displays the working conditions of a motor vehicle and its components using the scope of their physical characteristics (e.g., scale values or digital display)
3.3
tell-tale
an optical signal, which, when lit, indicates the activation of a device on the vehicle, or the normal state or failure of certain function or condition of a motor vehicle, or a certain kind of functional fault
3.4
symbol
a graphic used to identify controls, indicators and tell-tales
3.5
similar symbol
graphics proportional to the symbols defined in 3.4
3.6
common space
an area that can display two or more kinds of informative functions (such as symbols) asynchronously
3.7
adjacent
no other symbols, controls, indicators, tell-tales or potential interference source exist between the symbols or the controls, indicators or tell-tales indicated on the symbols
4 Requirements
4.1 Basic requirements
4.1.1 If the motor vehicle is equipped with controls, indicators and tell-tales listed in 5.1, the corresponding symbols are mandatory and shall be indicated. The symbols shall meet each requirement in 5.1.
4.1.2 If the motor vehicle is equipped with controls, indicators and tell-tales listed in 5.2, the corresponding symbols are not mandatory and may not be indicated compulsorily. The symbols, if indicated, shall meet each requirement in 5.2.
4.1.3 If the motor vehicle is equipped with controls, indicators and tell-tales other than those listed in Chapter 5, the corresponding symbols may not be indicated. If they are to be indicated, the corresponding symbols in ISO 2575 are recommended; if the symbols are to be designed automatically, the rules in Annex B shall be followed.
4.1.4 If it is deemed necessary to make the meaning of the symbols more clear and accurate, additional information such as words, numbers and letters may be added to the symbols listed in Chapter 5 and such additional information shall be designed in accordance with the principles of Annex B.
4.1.5 The use of similar symbols shall meet the relevant provisions of 4.1.1~ 4.1.4.
4.1.6 The basic graphics of the symbol shall comply with those specified in Annex A.
4.1.7 The symbols shall be legible and distinguishable against the background color, and they shall be permanent.
4.1.8 As for multi-function controls, corresponding symbols shall be available for each function.
4.1.9 The controls, indicators or tell-tales of the same function, if combined together, may share the same symbol.
4.1.10 The graphic texts on the motor vehicle, which are used for other purposes, shall not be confused with the symbols specified in this standard.
4.1.11 The symbols marked in accordance with 5.1 and 5.2 on the motor vehicle for all the controls, indicators and tell-tales shall be described in the instruction manual of the motor vehicle.
4.1.12 The modification of the symbols specified in this standard is only restricted to the following aspects; and the modifications shall be made in accordance with the principles of Annex B without changing the basic constitute element of the symbol or affecting the identifiability of the symbols when they are used;
——The adjustment of line width, clearance, drawing scale, arc radian, lead angle and other details;
4.1.13 The common space displaying multi-information shall meet the following requirements:
——The tell-tales and indicators in the common space shall provide relevant information when the functional status indicated by them is activated;
——When two or more tell-tales are activated, the information shall be repeated automatically in sequence or selected by the driver for checking;
——The tell-tales for braking system fault, headlamp high beam, direction indicator lamp and seat belt warning shall not be set in the same common space for display;
——If any of the tell-tales for braking system fault, headlamp high beam, direction indicator lamp and seat belt warning is set in the same common space for display, the information displayed by the tell-tale shall replace all the other information within the common space;
——The tell-tales for braking system fault, headlamp high beam, direction indicator lamp and seat belt warning shall not be automatically cancelled or manually cancelled by the driver;
——Unless otherwise specified in a specific (other) standard, the color of the tell-tales present in the common space is not specified.
4.2 Color of tell-tale symbol
4.2.1 As for the tell-tale symbols specified in 5.1 and 5.2 of this standard, their colors shall comply with the requirements of corresponding clauses, in addition, it is allowed to use other colors specified in 4.2.2 to express different working condition or meaning according to different functional requirements.
4.2.2 Meaning of the colors:
——Red: emergent or urgent conditions endangering personal safety or easy to cause serious damage to equipment and systems;
——Yellow or amber: improper operational constraint which requires attention, or motor vehicle system failure which may damage the motor vehicle, or other conditions that may cause danger in the future;
——Green: safe, normal operating mode or working state.
4.2.3 For symbols indicating temperature and cold or hot conditions, red indicates that the temperature is high or it is in hot condition and blue indicates that the temperature is low or it is in cold condition.
4.2.4 If the above-mentioned conditions do not apply, white or black which is in obvious contrast with the background color may be used.
4.3 Positions of the symbols
4.3.1 It shall be ensured that symbols specified in this standard can be identified by the driver at relevant position which shall be such that the driver seated at the driver's position may move freely under the protection of collision restraint system after adjustment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
4.3.2 Symbols of controls, indicators and tell-tales shall be located thereon or its vicinity. As for the multi-function control, the symbol is not required to be in its vicinity but shall be as close as possible.
5 Type of Symbols and Display Colors of Tell-tales
5.1 Display colors of symbols and tell-tales mandatory to be marked for the controls, indicators and tell-tales of motor vehicles
5.1.1 Symbol for the master lighting switch control and tell-tale is as shown in Figure 1. The display color of tell-tale shall be green and the inner area of the symbol shall be blank or printed solid.

4 Requirements
4.1 Basic requirements
4.1.1 If the motor vehicle is equipped with controls, indicators and tell-tales listed in 5.1, the corresponding symbols are mandatory and shall be indicated. The symbols shall meet each requirement in 5.1.
4.1.2 If the motor vehicle is equipped with controls, indicators and tell-tales listed in 5.2, the corresponding symbols are not mandatory and may not be indicated compulsorily. The symbols, if indicated, shall meet each requirement in 5.2.
4.1.3 If the motor vehicle is equipped with controls, indicators and tell-tales other than those listed in Chapter 5, the corresponding symbols may not be indicated. If they are to be indicated, the corresponding symbols in ISO 2575 are recommended; if the symbols are to be designed automatically, the rules in Annex B shall be followed.
