Formaldehyde emission grading for wood-based panel and finishing products
1 Scope
This standard specifies the requirements, test methods and judgment rules of formaldehyde emission grading.
This standard is applicable to the formaldehyde emission grading for various interior wood-based panel and finishing products, such as fiberboards, particleboards, plywoods, blockboards, reconstituted decorative woods, laminated veneer lumbers, laminated woods, decorated wood-based panels, wood-based floorings, wood-based wall-boards and wood-based doors.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 18259-2018 apply.
4 Requirements
The formaldehyde emission of interior wood-based panel and finishing products is classified into three grades according to the emission limit, as shown in Table 1.
Table 1 Formaldehyde emission grading for interior wood-based panel and finishing products
In mg/m3
Formaldehyde emission limit grade Limit Identification
Grade E1a ≤0.124 E1
Grade E0 ≤0.050 E0
Grade ENF ≤0.025 ENF
a The formaldehyde emission limit and identification for Grade E1 are those for wood-based panel and finishing products specified in GB 18580-2017.
5 Test methods
5.1 Preparation of test piece
5.1.1 For wood-based panel and finishing products with both sides exposed for use, the test piece has a length of l=(500±5)mm and a width of b=(500±5)mm, and two test pieces are prepared with edge sealed with formaldehyde-free aluminum tape. The length of each test piece with edge unsealed is (750±5)mm.
5.1.2 For wood-based panel and finishing products with only one side exposed for use, such as wood-based flooring and wood-based wall-board, only the exposed side is tested, and the test piece has a length of l=(500±5)mm and a width of b=(500±5)mm. If the samples are not enough in size, they may be spliced for preparing the test pieces. Four test pieces are prepared before sticking two test pieces back to back with formaldehyde-free adhesive or sealing the back and all sides of the test piece with formaldehyde-free aluminum tape.
5.1.3 For hollow particleboards, the test piece has a length of l=(500±5)mm and a width of b=(500±5)mm, and two test pieces are prepared with porous edge sealed with formaldehyde-free aluminum tape. The length of exposed imperforate edge is (750±5)mm.
5.1.4 For the laminated woods, two test pieces are prepared with edge unsealed. The total exposed area equals to the total surface area, and the total area of each piece is 0.50m2. If the samples are not enough in size, they may be spliced for preparing the test pieces.
5.1.5 For the wood-based doors, two test pieces are prepared by reserving two side frames and the bottom frame, and each piece has an exposed area (excluding the four sides) of 0.50m2, with sawing edges sealed with formaldehyde-free aluminum tape.
5.2 Determination of formaldehyde emission
The formaldehyde emission is determined according to those specified in GB/T 17657-2013, 4.60, and the result is accurate to 0.001mg/m3.
6 Judgment rules
If the inspection result complies with the specified limit for a grade, the test piece shall be judged as meeting the requirements of the grade.
