1 Scope
This part of GB/T 231 specifies the principle, symbols and abbreviated terms, apparatus, test piece, procedure, uncertainty of the results and test report for the Brinell hardness test for metallic materials.
This part specifies the Brinell hardness test is up to the limit of 650 HBW.
For Brinell hardness test of specific materials or products, shall be specified in particular standards.

3 Principle
An indenter (hardmetal ball with certain diameter) is forced into the surface of a test piece and, after removal of the force, the diameter of the indentation d left in the surface is measured (see Figure 1).
